famous cafe, tons of outdoor tables right in the heart of barcelona. though the coffee is a higher price here, it's worth the people watching and it is a good central place to meet.
for 2 euros, you can go to the roof of catedral, the big cathedral in barrio gotico (the gothic quarter) and see the angels and other carvings close-up. it feels like a bit of sacriledge to me, for some reason, but all the same like a good little tourist i went.
this is a view of barcelona, from the roof of my apartment that i lived in last year.
two goals while living in spain: one, join a street performance band and sing my heart out. two, learn to make graffiti like this, where the expressions can tell so much with just a few swipes of a spray can. how do they do that?
i found this on a long wall close to the modern art museum, in what is called a "free graffiti zone." the best graffiti artists put their work here. if you've done a really great job, respect for the artwork keeps it there. if you've done a crap job, within a fortnight it will have been covered up with something better.
one of the best graffiti artist in europe was doing a stint in barcelona and i happened to meet him one late night along the streets. i met him right before returning to the states last year, otherwise i would have asked if i could be his apprentice.
sandra was the inspiration for a french graffiti artist, and she was so proud she wanted her picture taken with the graff that she had inspired.
i was explaining to a newcomer to barcelona, who was complaining about "all the graffiti" that what she was complaining about was Tagging, not real graffiti. true graffiti, i said, is a refined art form. this image is a good example of what i was trying to explain to her.
my journal...this is a typical page, to-do lists and drawings and everything all thrown together. some people have certain journals for certain things, other books for notes and all so organized....i put it all in one place. my journal holds my life.
another little shot of my current journal. it's #34 since i started doing this journal thing in my first drawing class in college in the fall of 1990.
i like to work big, the bigger the better. right before moving back to spain, i was commissioned to do this 4'x6' painting for a woman who had a huge wall in her living room and was jealous of her sister, who had a painting of mine in Her living room. i was in heaven, making this piece. next to journal pages, 4'x6' canvases are my favorite size.
it's a horrible foto but i was rushing out the door to move to spain when i realized i hadn't documented this last painting before the move.
some paintings leaning against a wall in my studio back in the states. i like to work big, the bigger the better. right before moving back to spain, i was commissioned to do a 4'x6' painting for a woman who had a huge wall in her living room and was jealous of her sister, who had a painting of mine in Her living room. i was in heaven, making this peice. next to journal pages, 4'x6' canvases are my favorite size.
people always want a photo of the artist in front of the work they've just purchased. i'm not sure what this phenomenon is about, and as a photographer i hate having my photo taken, but hey. they've just given me good money because they like what i do. so i oblige them.
this is me and massi, my husband, on our wedding day (july 25, just a bit more than a month ago!)
notice how empty this area is right now. that was a week ago. now it is full, constantly, of people taking advantage of my neighborhood
it's small, but it's well-equipped and Everything Works Well. a true rarity it seems in these parts
this apartment is full of ikea wonders. exhibit a: this table folds out to double its size without the usual craziness of legs with foldable tables. it makes a great workspace to spread out all of my art supplies....or have a bunch of friends over for dinner....but i must admit, these days the outdoor table usually wins out during the day for the place to work or eat or...well anything really.
this is the beach 3 minutes from my apartment, i like to walk here to sit and write. or just stare off at the waves....
this is what you can see of the beach from our terrace....it is my morning coffee view
and if you are sitting at the outdoor table (say, for example, you don't have the energy to drink your morning coffee standing up), this is the view
